Split Nocturne
2016
oil on canvas

Split Nocturne is the twin to Split. Inspired by the bell tower of Cathedral of Saint Domnius, Split [from a photo by my gal pal, Tan Huilin]. I'd decided on painting a nocturnal partner to the light-washed Split, but from an alternate spatial perspective.

Split was inspired by the bell tower of Cathedral of Saint Domnius, Split. [From a photo by my good friend, Gan Eng Liong].
All spaces evoke character, call it aura, ambience, mood... The spatial subject matters of my painting tend to be void of human life. Instead, I hope to express the character of a space through colour and stroke, thereby creating a spectrum of mood which resonates with the audience.
what was once 61 Dunbar Walk
2016
oil on canvas

This was once my family home, housing four generations of Chews. It was massive. It was warmth...and kindness. And home to clan gatherings, cookouts and barbecues. We have all since moved to our littler homes and the house no longer stands. It is now a loving memory of the selflessness of grandparents and immense love of each family member. It is a spectre; today, in its place, are four units-- four new homes to other families.
