Calm [2006] oil and pastel on canvas, 24 x 36

Calm was inspired by Degas’ ballerina’s and Monet’s Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (Sunlight), Waterlilies and his whiter-scale works. I loved the tranquility of my painting process for Calm, as well as my other subtler white-scale pieces-- a quietening of the underlying tumult that threatened to brim over. An emotive tension of contrasting moods is what I hope to convey in these pieces.

A triptych of Calm now sits in a friend’s home, somewhere in Germany, and I hope it brings her much joy.
